When can I plant Balsam in Zone 4a

One of the first steps we take when we are making a decision about our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

It's a good idea to figure out when you can plant balsam by using the USDA zone info for Zone 4a.

The earliest that you can plant balsam in Zone 4a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant balsam and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your balsam may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your balsam indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost when the weather gets warmer is on May 15 in Zone 4a. It might get as low as -30°F during the coldest months of winter.

It's important to remember that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4a and it is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 4a there is a last frost after May 15 so always be ready to cover your balsam if we have a late frost.
