When can I plant Kohlrabi in Zone 4a

One of the first steps we take when we are determining our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

The first chance to plant kohlrabi in Zone 4a should be estimated by referring to the USDA zone info.

You can plant kohlrabi a little earlier in the year because they are moderately cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant kohlrabi in Zone 4a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant kohlrabi and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your kohlrabi may not have a chance to fully mature. You can get started a couple of weeks earlier by starting your kohlrabi indoors.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 4a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -30°F.

Just be sure to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 4a may not be accurate from year to year and our actual date of last frost is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 4a there is a last frost after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your kohlrabi if we have a late frost.
