When can I plant Iceberg lettuce in Zone 4a

Iceberg lettuce are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather which means that you can start planting them slightly earlier than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant iceberg lettuce in Zone 4a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant iceberg lettuce and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your iceberg lettuce may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your iceberg lettuce indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

In Zone 4a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -30°F during the coldest months of winter.

Just be sure to remember that our actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4a and it is different every year. Since half of the time in Zone 4a it frosts late in the year after May 15 be ready to cover your iceberg lettuce if we have one of those late frosts.
