When can I plant Watermelon in Zone 4a

One of the first steps we take when we are estimating our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A way of determining when it's a good idea to plant watermelon is to look at the USDA zone info for Zone 4a.

Watermelon require warm weather which means that it is necessary to wait until it warms up after the last frost when the weather gets warmer before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant watermelon in Zone 4a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant watermelon and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your watermelon may not have a chance to fully mature. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your watermelon indoors.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost when the weather gets warmer is on May 15 in Zone 4a. It might get as low as -30°F during the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost is an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4a we get surprised by a frost after May 15 so always be ready to protect your watermelon in the event of a surprise late frost.
