When can I plant Cilantro in Zone 4a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

By referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 4a you will be able to estimate when it's possible to plant cilantro.

When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

Cilantro do ok in moderate cold which tells us that you can get them planted just a bit earlier than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant cilantro in Zone 4a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant cilantro and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your cilantro may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your cilantro indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 4a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. We should expect an average low temperature of -30°F in the coldest months of winter.

Remember that USDA zone info for Zone 4a is an average and our actual date of last frost is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 4a it frosts late in the year after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to protect your cilantro in the event of a late frost.
