When can I plant Chicory in Zone 4a

Before planting it is a good idea to find our USDA Zone info to figure out our garden schedule. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

Chicory can survive in a little bit of cold which means that you can plant them a little bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant chicory in Zone 4a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant chicory and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your chicory may not have a chance to really do well. Starting your chicory indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

On average the last frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 4a. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -30°F.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4a there is a last frost after May 15 so be sure to be ready to protect your chicory in the event of a late frost.
