When can I plant Candytuft in Zone 4a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A common way of determining when you can plant candytuft is to refer to the USDA zone info for Zone 4a.

Since candytuft are moderately cold tolerant you can plant them a little earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant candytuft in Zone 4a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant candytuft and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your candytuft may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your candytuft indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

In Zone 4a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -30°F.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost is an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4a last frost occurs after May 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your candytuft if we have one of those late frosts.
