One of the best tools that you have as gardeners to help us figure out your gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for your area.

You should be able to estimate when it's the best time to plant pentas by looking at the USDA zone info for Zone 4a.

You should not plant pentas until after the last frost when the weather gets warmer because they are not cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant pentas in Zone 4a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant pentas and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your pentas may not have a chance to grow to maturity. You can get started a few weeks earlier by starting your pentas indoors.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 4a. In the coldest months of winter you can expect an average low temperature of -30°F.

Always keep in mind that the actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4a you get surprised by a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to protect your pentas if you have one of those late frosts.
