When can I plant Pentas in Zone 4a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

You should be able to estimate when it's the best time to plant pentas by looking at the USDA zone info for Zone 4a.

When you should plant them: After the last frost has passed.

You should not plant pentas until after the last frost when the weather gets warmer because they are not cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant pentas in Zone 4a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant pentas and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your pentas may not have a chance to grow to maturity. You can get started a few weeks earlier by starting your pentas indoors.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 4a. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -30°F.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4a we get surprised by a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to protect your pentas if we have one of those late frosts.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -30°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -25°F.
