The earliest that you can plant chervil in Zone 4a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant chervil and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your chervil may not have a chance to really do well. You can get started a few weeks earlier by starting your chervil indoors.

In Zone 4a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -30°F during the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 4a may not be accurate from year to year and the actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4a there is a last frost after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your chervil if you have a late frost.
