When can I plant Onions in Zone 4a

The USDA Zone info is a great tool for gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

By referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 4a it's a good idea to estimate when it's a good idea to plant onions.

Onions do well in cold which tells us that you can start planting them much earlier than other frost tender plants.

The earliest that you can plant onions in Zone 4a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant onions and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your onions may not have a chance to fully mature. You can get started a couple of weeks earlier by starting your onions indoors.

On average the last frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 4a. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -30°F.
