When can I plant Bittercress in Zone 3a

One of the first steps we take when we are figuring out our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

Bittercress do well in mild cold which means that you can plant them just a tiny bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant bittercress in Zone 3a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant bittercress and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your bittercress may not have a chance to grow to maturity. You can get started a couple of weeks earlier by starting your bittercress indoors.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 3a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. We should expect an average low temperature of -40°F in the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 3a is just an average and our actual date of last frost is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 3a we get surprised by a frost after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your bittercress if we have one of those late frosts.
