When can I plant Lavender in Zone 3a

One of the first steps we take when we are making a decision about our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

Lavender do well in moderate cold which tells us that you can start planting them earlier than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant lavender in Zone 3a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lavender and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your lavender may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your lavender indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost when the weather gets warmer is on May 15 in Zone 3a. It might get as low as -40°F during the coldest months of winter.

Remember that our actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 3a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 3a we get a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are prepared to cover your lavender in the event of one of those late frosts.
