When can I plant Watermelon in Zone 3a

One of the first steps we take when we are determining our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant watermelon in Zone 3a can be figured out by reviewing the USDA zone info.

It's probably a bad idea to plant watermelon until after the last frost when the weather gets warmer because they require warm weather.

The earliest that you can plant watermelon in Zone 3a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant watermelon and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your watermelon may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your watermelon indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 3a. It might get as low as -40°F during the coldest months of winter.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 3a may not be accurate from year to year our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 3a we get a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are prepared to cover your watermelon if we have a late frost.
