When can I plant Sorrel in Zone 3a

Sorrel are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather which means that you can get them planted earlier than other frost tender plants.

The earliest that you can plant sorrel in Zone 3a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant sorrel and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your sorrel may not have a chance to fully mature. You can get started a few weeks earlier by starting your sorrel indoors.

In Zone 3a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -40°F during the coldest months of winter.

It's important to remember that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 3a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 3a it frosts late in the year after May 15 so always be ready to protect your sorrel if we have a surprise late frost.
