When can I plant Pumpkins in Zone 3a

Pumpkins require warm weather which means that you really should wait until it warms up after the last frost when the weather gets warmer before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant pumpkins in Zone 3a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant pumpkins and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your pumpkins may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your pumpkins indoors is a great way to get them started a few weeks earlier.

On average the last frost when the weather gets warmer is on May 15 in Zone 3a. We can expect an average low temperature of -40°F in the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 3a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 3a there is a last frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your pumpkins if we have one of those late frosts.
