When can I plant Dianthus in Zone 3a

One of the first steps we take when we are getting a good idea our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

Dianthus do ok in moderate cold which means that you can plant them a little earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant dianthus in Zone 3a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant dianthus and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your dianthus may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your dianthus indoors is a great way to get them started a little bit earlier.

On average the last frost is on May 15 in Zone 3a. It might get as low as -40°F during the coldest months of winter.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 3a and it will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 3a we get surprised by a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your dianthus if we have one of those late frosts.
