When can I plant Chard in Zone 12a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

One way of estimating when to plant chard is to use the USDA zone info for Zone 12a.

When you should plant them: Up to 5 weeks before last frost.

Chard can survive in moderate cold which means that you can plant them just a bit earlier in the year than other frost tender plants.

The earliest that you can plant chard in Zone 12a is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant chard and expect a good harvest is probably November. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your chard may not have a chance to really do well. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your chard indoors.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 12a it never frosts. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of 50°F.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 12a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Since it never frosts in Zone 12a you do not have to be ready to protect your chard in the event of a surprise late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 50°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 55°F.
