When can I plant Thyme in Zone 12a

One of the first steps we take when we are estimating our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

Frost tolerance for thyme: Very tolerant of frost.
When you should plant them: Up to 7 weeks before last frost.

Since thyme are one of those plants that can tolerate quite a bit of cold weather you can plant them quite a bit earlier in the year than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant thyme in Zone 12a is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant thyme and expect a good harvest is probably November. Any later than that and your thyme may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your thyme indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 12a it never frosts. It might get as low as 50°F during the coldest months of winter.

Remember that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 12a and it changes from year to year. Since it never frosts in Zone 12a you do not have to be ready to cover your thyme if we have a late frost.
