When can I plant Clover in Zone 7a

The USDA Zone info is a great tool for gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A common way of getting a good idea when to plant clover is to look at the USDA zone info for Zone 7a.

Since clover are barely cold tolerant you can plant them a bit earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant clover in Zone 7a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant clover and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your clover may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your clover indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

The average date of last frost is April 15 in Zone 7a. We can expect an average low temperature of 0°F in the coldest months of winter.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 7a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 7a we get surprised by a frost after April 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your clover in the event of a late frost.
