When can I plant Kale in Zone 7a

One of the first steps we take when we are getting a good idea our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

You should be able to determine when you can plant kale by using the USDA zone info for Zone 7a.

You can plant kale just a bit earlier in the year because they are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather.

The earliest that you can plant kale in Zone 7a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant kale and expect a good harvest is probably September. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your kale may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your kale indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 7a the average date of last frost happens on April 15. It might get as low as 0°F during the coldest months of winter.

Always keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 7a is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 7a we get a frost after April 15 so be sure to be ready to cover your kale if we have a late frost.
