When can I plant Artichokes in Zone 2a

One of the first steps we take when we are getting a good idea our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

Since artichokes do well in moderate cold you can plant them just a bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant artichokes in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant artichokes and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your artichokes may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your artichokes indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -50°F.

Always keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 2a may not be accurate from year to year and our actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a last frost occurs after May 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your artichokes in the event of a late frost.
