When can I plant Larkspur in Zone 2a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

By referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 2a you should be able to determine when it's the best time to plant larkspur.

When you should plant them: Up to 7 weeks before last frost.

Larkspur are very cold tolerant which means that you can plant them much earlier than other frost tender plants.

The earliest that you can plant larkspur in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant larkspur and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your larkspur may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your larkspur indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -50°F.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 2a is an average our actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a last frost occurs after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your larkspur in the event of a surprise late frost.
