When can I plant Lovage in Zone 2a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

It's possible to figure out when it's the best time to plant lovage by referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 2a.

When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

You can plant lovage just a tiny bit earlier in the year because they are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather.

The earliest that you can plant lovage in Zone 2a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lovage and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your lovage may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your lovage indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost is on May 15 in Zone 2a. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -50°F.

Just be sure to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 2a is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 2a it frosts late in the year after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your lovage in the event of a late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -50°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -45°F.
