When can I plant Hosta in Zone 2a

When you should plant them: Up to 5 weeks before last frost.

Hosta tend to make it in mild cold which means that you can plant them just a bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant hosta in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant hosta and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your hosta may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your hosta indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 2a. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -50°F.

Just be sure to remember that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 2a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 2a we get a frost after May 15 be ready to cover your hosta in the event of one of those late frosts.
