Since chard are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather you can plant them a little earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant chard in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant chard and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your chard may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your chard indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 2a. In the coldest months of winter you should expect an average low temperature of -50°F.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 2a is not always accurate the actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 2a last frost occurs after May 15 be ready to cover your chard if you have a surprise late frost.
