When can I plant Squash in Zone 2a

The USDA Zone info is a great tool for gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

In Zone 2a you can figure out when it's a good idea to plant squash by referring to the USDA zone info.

Since squash do not do well in cold weather you have to wait until after the last frost when the weather gets warmer before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant squash in Zone 2a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant squash and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your squash may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your squash indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 2a. It might get as low as -50°F during the coldest months of winter.

Remember that USDA zone info for Zone 2a may not be accurate from year to year and our actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 2a we get a frost after May 15 be ready to protect your squash if we have a surprise late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -50°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -45°F.
