When can I plant Chicory in Zone 2a

Before planting it is a good idea to find our USDA Zone info to estimate our garden schedule. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

When you should plant them: Up to 5 weeks before last frost.

Since chicory are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather you can plant them a little bit earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant chicory in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant chicory and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your chicory may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your chicory indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -50°F.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 2a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a we get a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your chicory in the event of a surprise late frost.
