When can I plant Gherkins in Zone 2a

One of the first steps we take when we are getting a good idea our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant gherkins in Zone 2a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant gherkins and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your gherkins may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your gherkins indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 2a. It might get as low as -50°F during the coldest months of winter.

Remember that USDA zone info for Zone 2a is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a we get a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your gherkins if we have a surprise late frost.
