When can I plant Violets in Zone 2a

One of the first steps we take when we are getting a good idea our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

In Zone 2a you can estimate when it's a good idea to plant violets by looking at the USDA zone info.

When you should plant them: Up to 5 weeks before last frost.

Since violets do well in moderate cold you can plant them a little earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant violets in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant violets and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your violets may not have a chance to really do well. Starting your violets indoors is a great way to get them started a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -50°F during the coldest months of winter.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 2a may not be accurate from year to year our actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a we get a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your violets if we have a late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -50°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -45°F.
