When can I plant Coleus in Zone 2a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The first opportunity to plant coleus in Zone 2a should be estimated by reviewing the USDA zone info.

Coleus are not cold tolerant which means that it's important to wait until it warms up after all chance of frost has passed before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant coleus in Zone 2a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant coleus and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your coleus may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your coleus indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -50°F during the coldest months of winter.

Always keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 2a may not be accurate from year to year and our actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a we get surprised by a frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to protect your coleus in the event of a late frost.
