When can I plant Dahlia in Zone 2a

One of the first steps we take when we are determining our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant dahlia in Zone 2a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant dahlia and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your dahlia may not have a chance to really do well. Starting your dahlia indoors is a great way to get them started a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. We should expect an average low temperature of -50°F in the coldest months of winter.

Remember that our actual date of last frost is an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 2a and it is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 2a there is a last frost after May 15 so always be ready to cover your dahlia in the event of a surprise late frost.
