Since spearmint are very cold tolerant you can plant them earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant spearmint in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant spearmint and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your spearmint may not have a chance to fully mature. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your spearmint indoors.

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 2a. It might get as low as -50°F during the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 2a may not be accurate from year to year and the actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a last frost occurs after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to protect your spearmint in the event of a late frost.
