When can I plant Oleander in Zone 2a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A way of making a decision about when it's possible to plant oleander is to check out the USDA zone info for Zone 2a.

When you should plant them: After the last frost has passed.

Oleander require warm weather which tells us that it's necessary to wait until it warms up after the last frost when the weather gets warmer before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant oleander in Zone 2a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant oleander and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your oleander may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your oleander indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2a the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -50°F during the coldest months of winter.

It's important to remember that our actual date of last frost is an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 2a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a it frosts late in the year after May 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your oleander if we have a late frost.
