When can I plant Phlox in Zone 2a

Before planting it is a good idea to find our USDA Zone info to estimate our garden schedule. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

By referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 2a it's possible to determine when you can plant phlox.

When you should plant them: Up to 5 weeks before last frost.

Phlox do ok in a little bit of cold which tells us that you can plant them a bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant phlox in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant phlox and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your phlox may not have a chance to grow to maturity. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your phlox indoors.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost is on May 15 in Zone 2a. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -50°F.

Remember that USDA zone info for Zone 2a may not be accurate from year to year and our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2a there is a last frost after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your phlox if we have a late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -50°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -45°F.
