When can I plant Lupine in Zone 2a

Before planting it is a good idea to find our USDA Zone info to figure out our garden schedule. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

Lupine do well in moderate cold which means that you can plant them a little earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant lupine in Zone 2a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lupine and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your lupine may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your lupine indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

On average the last frost is on May 15 in Zone 2a. We should expect an average low temperature of -50°F in the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 2a may not be accurate from year to year and our actual date of last frost is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 2a there is a last frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your lupine if we have a surprise late frost.
